Abstract: The qualifiers “mu”, “jie”, “xak5” in Min dialect in Haikou are used to measure the length of segments or things, but the motivations and usages of each are different. “Mu” is the qualifier in Min dialect used to describe the characteristics of things. With the influence of the qualifier “jie”, it is motivated by the metaphoric mechanism and the law of parallel-derived words, used to measure things with knurs, and its length is integral multiple of “knur”; while “jie” is used to measure things with relatively definite length measurement; and “xak5” originates from the Dong-Tai language family and the conversion of verbs with the corresponding “segment” meaning, which is used to measure things with any length.
