From “Guishun” to “Jingxi”:A Study on the National Identity of the Zhuang Minority in the Frontier Area

Abstract: Jingxi, originally called “Guishun”, is a county located in the frontier area in southern China, bearing a good meaning of peace and tranquility for the western edge of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. As a national key county of the Program to Develop Border Areas and Improve People’s Living, Jingxi has been taking action for the program to promote a sustained and rapid economic development for the city, as well as all-round development for education, science and technology, culture and other undertakings, whereby a good economic, social and cultural basis has been set to strengthen the national identity of the Zhuang people. Ande, an ancient town with a history over a thousand years, is the site of the Zhuang minority’s first local government set up by its leader Nong Zhigao. The local Zhuang people commemorate Nong Zhigao as their folk hero in festival ceremony, and highlight and reshape the spirit of patriotism by performing “Nong Zhigao six Battle Flag”. In strengthening the national identity of the ethnic minorities in the border, we should make full use of its own historical resources to promote local economic and social development, and achieve the purpose of national identity. The way to reach national identity should not be rigid, and therefore we should combine the specific historical background and geographical environment and resources to find out an ideal approach.
