The Diffusion Phenomena of Nasalized Finals of Min Dialect in Eastern Guangdong

Abstract: Part of the nasalized finals which have four sources in Min Dialect of Eastern Guangdong (MDEG) comes from the ancient Yin phonological rhymes, which are not assimilated by the consonant. By analyzing and discussing the occurring and forming process of how the ancient Yin phonological rhymes nasalized, this paper concludes that these phenomena are the result of “pronunciation mechanism diffusion”, and that the distribution situation of the nasalized finals in MDEG speaking area today comes into being because of the vocabulary diffusion. This study not only reveals the phonetic phenomena and occurring and formation principles in MDEG but also complements and develops the "diffusion" theory.
