Abstract: In the Tang Dynasty, dancing and singing performances as well as the opera acting are in vogue. Most emperors have preference for sensual pleasures. Various actors, humble in origin, to respond to the emperor’s call, work in the court, and are the major undertakers of the performing activities, serving the imperial family and courtiers. During their service, they are provided with food, clothing and land from the government, or even rewarded by the emperor. Those who have good appearance and are good at acting have the chance to edge into official careers. However, in general, these court actors are not so well off socially, and are often despised by scholar-officials.
