Abstract: Fanqie characters, the special characters in 19th hakka literature Qimengqianxue, can be divided into two types: one is that their components only represent their sounds, and the other is that their components indicate both their sounds and sense. Different from sound compound characters and chemical characters, the components of fanqie characters have the function to indicate the sense of words, which is the result from contrasting Chinese characters and western characters, and summarizing advantage and disadvantage of the Chinese characters. The creation of fanqie characters is also an attempt to combine the sense and the sounds of Chinese characters
