DPSIR Model Based Assessment of China's Inter-provincial Environmental Quality and Analysis of Its Influencing Factors

Abstract: This paper, based on the DPSIR model, is aimed to construct China's environmental quality assessment system. The entropy method is employed to weight the corresponding indicators and calculate the environmental quality scores of 30 provinces and cities in China (2007-2016). The results show that 1) in general, China's environmental quality has been improving, but there is obvious spatial and temporal heterogeneity; 2) in terms of spatial distribution, the southern region enjoys obvious superiority to the northern; 3) as for economic belts distribution, the three in East, Central and West, the quality falls into a pattern of “high on both sides and low in the middle”; 4) from the perspective of time and space, the changes (2007-2016) bear a feature of rising, lifting, stationary and anti-L. The spatial effect decomposition shows that 1) the local government's environmental regulation can not only improve the quality score, but also produce significant spatial spillover effects, thus a good influence on the surrounding areas; 2) an improvement of local economy and technology research promotes environmental quality, but it will inhibit that of its neighbors; 3) the upgrading of local industrial structure noticeably enhances the environmental quality, and the increase of local population will inhibit it; both have low radiation effects on the surrounding areas and have no significant impact on their environmental quality.
