Metadiscourse of Curriculum History: A Historical Philosophy Reflection Based on Kliebard’s The Struggle for the American Curriculum (18931958)

Abstract: Curriculum history, as it bears profound meaning of historical philosophy, should be in urgent need elucidated by integrating the perspective of historical philosophy and the text of curriculum history. Kliebard’s The Struggle for the American Curriculum (1893–1958) is regarded as a benchmark and model for the “historical turn” in American curriculum research. Kliebard, in the book,elaborates the historical view of multicomponent hybridization of American curriculum history research, and it is a progressive speculative historical philosophy; the theory of interest group of historical facts confirms Kliebard's moderate grasp in the analysis of historical philosophy; Kliebard, with instinct, realizes the text practice of narrating historical philosophy through telling the curriculum history story in the period of American Progressive Education. The concern, reflection and self-consciousness of historical philosophy are helpful to explore a kind of meta discourse of curriculum history.
