Abstract: The number of tones in Chinese taken as an example, this paper presents the three core ideas of big data general thinking, fault-tolerant thinking, related thinking and linguistic geographic information system as the methods of studying Chinese dialects and their evolution. By using large data to obtain Chinese tone types, and drawing language co-occurrence areas through GIS, we can observe the correlation between language evolution and historical administrative divisions, and thus seek the historical reasons for language evolution.

Key words: big data, geographic information system, tone number, historical map, co-concurrence areas
