Chinese characters crystallize the unique wisdom of Chinese civilization. Even the simple strokes like heng (horizontal) and shu (vertical) bear profound philosophical principles. As direct components of Chinese characters, the two strokes function either as independent characters, as constituent characters within compounds, or as non-character components. As independent characters, “一” (yi, one) marks the beginning of numbers, while “丨” (gun, vertical) signifies unimpeded connection between above and below. As constituent characters, “一” and “丨” contribute their meanings of numerical origin or vertical continuity directly into the conceptual formation of new graphs. As non-character components, “一” and “丨” each possess five or six typical usages. In characters such as “土” (tu, earth), “才” (cai, talent), “屮” (che, sprout), “屯” (tun, difficulty), “之” (zhi, to go), and “出” (chu, to emerge), the non-character component “丨” embodies the principle of generative continuity through formal iconicity, formal indication, and formal evocation. The structural arrangement of Shuowen Jiezi, which begins with the independent character “一”, further reveals the principles of generation and continuity. The Way of Heaven and Earth is generative; humans must integrate the many into the one, thereby participating in the cosmic order through an unceasingly self-strengthening human way. This ancient wisdom of connecting and sustaining generative life possesses significant contemporary relevance. Whether exploring the distinctive characteristics of Chinese civilization or constructing a knowledge system for Chinese philosophy, it is necessary to return to the Chinese characters themselves, upon which philosophical thinking relies for its articulation.
