Abstract: Luxun’s impression of India is formed by his general comparison of world cultures. Such an impression can be traced back to his brief comments on India, and his knowing about Tagore and Gandhi conveyed in his Qin Nian Bi Du Shu (1925), together with his description of India. A low coverage of translation and Luxun’s reading of Indian books, as well as a lack of personal experience, renders his perception of India biased, and even subjective with full imagination. Hence, Luxun’s imagination and cognition of India, we can infer, are time-conditioned and unusual, a lesson which we can learn a lot for a friendly cultural exchanges today.

Key words: India, Luxun, Tagore, imagination, cognition
