The Observation and Exposition of Composing Historical Works on Liu Song Dynasty and Song Annals before and after Shen Yue’s Period

Abstract: The composing of Song Annals is quite complicated, and content pre-written by He Chengtian, Xu Ai and others builds a good foundation for the book. However, according to the short time form Shen Yue receiving edict to presenting Song annals as well as the taboo, people in the Qing dynasty extrapolated that the majority of "Biography" was He Chengtian and Xu Ai’s old manuscript, while “Eight Records” must be created by Shen Yue. People in the Qing dynasty didn’t take into account the preparation and accumulation done by Shen Yue before, so their judgment may not be exact. The period of presenting “Eight Records” to emperor was not after the time of “Biography” and not in the hiatus of more than ten years, but it is during the Yongming Dynasty, around four or five years later. The compilation of “Eight Records” is not completely created on Shen Yue’s own; instead, he just did one part of it.
