From the Absolute to the Abstract: The History of Space—An Interpretation of Lefebvre's The Production of Space

Abstract: The social space, according to Lefebvre, is produced by a certain spatial practice. The production itself, with the historical development of human social life, thus is bound to be a historical process. Therefore, the clue to understand the historical development of space can only start from the production mode of “how to produce” under certain historical conditions in which human beings change the productive forces of nature and inter-subjective relations of production; spatial production always relies on the spatial relations of a certain mode of production—the absolute space that is drawn from nature, the historical space that enters into accumulation, the space where bourgeois abstraction becomes domination, and the differentiated space in the future after the emancipation of mankind.
